Nissan workers in Mississippi called upon UAW for support in their pursuit of a fair union election and Nissan’s acknowledgement of the right to organize. It’s no surprise – UAW has supported civil rights on a global scale, including in South Africa.

As far back as the 1970s, UAW stood with South African workers to end the racist and undemocratic apartheid system. To demonstrate its intolerance with the oppressive system of government, UAW withdrew its funds from banks that loaned to South Africa.  This 1985 UAW publication puts a face to the struggles workers faced at the time, including the disenfranchisement of 72 percent of the country.

Former UAW President Owen Bieber traveled to South Africa as a member of the U.S. State Department Advisory Committee, which ultimately recommended sanctions to pressure the South African to replace apartheid with a nonracial democratic system.  Bieber and UAW passionately fought against discrimination in South Africa, and when Nelson Mandela toured the U.S. after his imprisonment had ended, he wanted to celebrate with UAW Local 600.  He thanked UAW and 45,000 people who came to celebrate.

Now, UAW is helping Mississippi workers fight unfairness on its home front in the U.S.  These workers need the international support of South Africa.  Read more about why workers want a union here, and learn about the growing global support for Mississippi Nissan workers.

South Africa stands with Mississippi Nissan workers who want a union. In global solidarity, South Africans welcome worker Betty Jones, embracing her and expressing their support through song.
